T

very berry season.  Indeed, don’t

plenty of berries all year round might just

excellent health.  When you can’t get enough
of the valuable properties of berries, take
Fruit Mightfrom Whitewing Labs.
Blue:  Longevity Color
B
lueberries, and their European
relative bilberries, may be one of
nature’s more important anti-aging
foods as well as an important ingredient in
eye supplements such as Energ-Eyes,
also from Whitewing Labs.
A recent study conducted by James
Joseph, Ph.D., chief of the neuroscience
laboratory at the Jean Mayer U.S.
Department of Agriculture Human
Nutrition Center on Aging at Tufts
University, demonstrated that a diet rich in
blueberry extract reversed some loss of
balance and coordination, and improved
short-term memory in aging rats.
Published in the September 15, 1999
issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, this
particular USDA study was the first to
actually demonstrate a reversal in
dysfunctions of behavior, going further
than earlier studies that linked high-
antioxidant fruits and vegetables only to
prevention of function loss.
“From what I’ve seen from our research,
the anthocyanins which give blueberries
their color may be very powerful and very
influential in giving blueberries their health
punch,” says Joseph.
“Understanding what’s responsible for
the blueberry’s health punch is fascinating to
me.  While we’ve long known that eating a
diet rich in fruits and vegetables is good for
us, we’re just now beginning to understand
the reasons why.  What we’ve found is that
color may be a strong part of the story, and
blue is emerging as one of the most
interesting colors of all.”
Studies by Ronald L. Prior, Ph.D., also
conducted at the Jean Mayer USDA Human
Nutrition Center on Aging, ranked
blueberries number one in antioxidant
activity when compared with 40 other
commercially available fruits and vegetables.
Another terrific reason we’ve made sure to
include it in Fruit Might.
Bilberries are known to help improve
night vision and offer protection against
development of cataracts and macular
degeneration.  That’s why we’ve made it a
major part of our eye formula, Energ-eyes.
“One-half cup of blueberries delivers as
much antioxidant power as five servings of
other fruits and vegetables such as peas,
carrots, apples, squash and broccoli,” says
Prior.  “While variety is still the key to a
healthy diet, I’m eating blueberries regularly.”
Raspberries, Strawberries,
and Pomegranates
Pack Healthy Punch
I
f you want to further reduce your risk
for premature aging, be sure to also fill
your holiday fare with plenty of
raspberries,
strawberries, and
pomegranates, says Daniel Nixon, M.D.,
president of the American Health
Foundation, Valhalla, New York.  Each of
these fruits is rich in a phytochemical,
ellagic acid, which has been shown to
cause death of damaging malignant cells in
the test tube and other experimental studies.
The process by which dangerously
malfunctioning cells are “programmed” to
die is known apoptosis.
Now, Nixon is conducting a study to see
whether raspberries reduce incidence of
colon polyps among persons at higher than
normal risk for colon cancer.
