Singing
the Non-Ovulatory, Mood-Swing Blues |
We women know
what we want and what we don’t want—and we don’t want to be singing
the non-ovulatory, mood-swing, hot flash blues! We’re part of the boomer generation—the forty-million women between the ages of 35 and 55 who want it all but who may feel that as they are getting older they are losing their magic and youthful glow. Many of my women patients are on their second marriage or divorced and too many of them have experienced infidelity by husbands seeking younger women. They feel they are no longer attractive to men. They do not feel pretty inside or out. They may be a few pounds overweight, suffering from sagging skin and wrinkles or worried about their mood swings and how these are affecting their relationship with their husband. Unfortunately, many women associate their self-esteem with how men perceive them. The problem isn’t just from the chin-up. A little make-up won’t solve the problem. The problem is also from the neck-down, inside and out. My female patients may be experiencing perimenopause (which often occurs in a woman’s mid-forties) or frank menopause. But, in either case, they are going through so many changes that actually start from within: vaginal loss of lubrication; leathering of skin; loss of their beautiful shapely legs; cellulite; weight gain. Many of my patients have mothers in their seventies and eighties. But when they look at their mothers, they are scared to death that they are becoming just like them. “I don't want to look like my mother,” is an exclamation of sheer terror that I often hear from my women patients. I know they mean no harm by what they say. I understand. These women are afraid. Perhaps their mothers have dowager’s hump or suffer other forms of bone loss, wrinkling or require a walker—and they are afraid that they will end up the same way. I don't blame them. Do you have those “I’m-becoming-my-mother” nightmares, too? Well, I can help you. As a medical doctor and member of the boomer generation, I’m here to say that together we're revolutionizing concepts of aging and beauty. Wouldn’t it be great to feel like you were thirty-something forever? Wouldn’t you love to look at your reflection in the mirror and, no matter what your chronological age is—whether thirty-five, forty, fifty, seventy |
