More Evidence Prostsafe Formulas Shrinks Prostate, Helps Hair Growth

There are so many benefits to working with nature and we are just now discovering them. Researchers reporting in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2002;8:143-52) note that men with male pattern baldness may increase hair growth by taking a preparation containing beta-sitosterol. Well, as luck would have it, nature's richest sources of beta-sitosterol and related compounds is saw palmetto, an herb found in the both of the men's health formulas from Whitewing Labs, Prostsafe and Prostsafe Plus.

In addition, another excellent natural source of beta-sitosterol is Pygeum africanum, found in Prostsafe Plus. Of course, these are men's formulas and marketed primarily. But the fact is, women can also use saw palmetto-based formulas for combating some of the processes involved in hair loss. In fact, saw palmetto is traditionally also used by women for female health, including breast enhancement.

Background
Male pattern baldness, a hereditary condition that most often affects men, is one of the most intractable types of hair loss today and can affect women as well as men. This is the kind of hair loss that often starts with a receding hairline and continues in a horseshoe pattern, leaving hair on the sides and back of the head mostly unaffected.

We now know that the same hormone metabolite of testosterone that causes benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) also causes male pattern baldness. That hormone is known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Although conventional medicines such as finasteride, which are used to treat male pattern baldness, are able to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT, these are considered to have undesirable side effects (including reduced sex drive and birth defects). Topical application of minoxidil also has been shown to inhibit this conversion but may also cause mild to moderate side effects.

Although we have long known that saw palmetto, and its component beta-sitosterol, can block the production of DHT in men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia, this is the first study to demonstrate that these compounds also help with hair loss. In addition, they do so without causing significant side effects.

Test Results

In the new study, 19 men between the ages of 23 and 64 years with mild to moderate hair loss were given either a placebo or a supplement containing saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol. After about five months, hair growth in 60% of the men taking the herbal combination had improved compared with their initial evaluation. In contrast, only 11% of those receiving the placebo improved.

These are incredibly encouraging findings for millions of men (and possibly women) with male pattern hair loss and they offer a relatively safe alternative for those who want to take a natural approach to this condition, says natural health expert Darin Ingels, N.D.

Currently, medical science has no known "cure" for male pattern baldness. Medical drugs such as finasteride and minoxidil must be taken continuously for best results. But now we have a very safe combination of herbal ingredients that also works not only to help reduce hair loss and promote hair growth but to take care of men's health.

Given the safety of saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol, this combination is a reasonable natural pathway for men with mild to moderate male pattern baldness before they try more toxic prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Which Formula to Choose
Men with mild prostate problems should choose Prostsafe. Men with more challenging prostate problems might benefit from Prostsafe Plus, which combines saw palmetto with Pygeum africanum and other synergistic herbal ingredients.

Can Women Use Herbal Combination?
Women also can experience what is typically called male pattern baldness, which usually shows up as a receding hairline and thinning hair on the crown of the head. Fortunately, women too will probably benefit from this combination. But we do advise women who are pregnant or who intend to become pregnant not to use this combination, since we do not have enough information on its use during pregnancy.

Prostsafe from Whitewing Labs can help men to avoid medical drug side effects and may reduce the need for surgery.
