Antioxidants
Improve Breathing
E
ating large amounts of fruit and
vegetables not only reduces the risk
of some types of cancer and stroke,
it can also help you breathe better.
A study of more than 3,000 men
throughout Europe shows that lung
function is best among men who consume
lots of fruit and vegetables.
In the study, published in the monthly
journal Thorax, antioxidants seemed to be
the key nutrients in fruits and vegetables that
accounted for their ability to stimulate better
breathing.  Antioxidants tend to have anti-
inflammatory actions, which is so important
for persons with breathing difficulties.
Profound Implications
T
his study shows us that a healthy diet
for asthmatics is rich in fruits and
vegetables.  It also shows us that the
natural world is filled with herbs and other
phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals that
can aid breathing, even among persons with
respiratory complaints.
RestPiration
from Whitewing Labs
supports healthy breathing among persons
with asthma, in part because of its
antioxidant properties and also because of
its inflammation-quieting qualities.
Ascorbic acid or vitamin C is a
powerful antioxidant that helps to protect
against the severity and rate of asthma
attacks.
Picrorhiza kurroa is a small herb that
grows in the pristine Indian Himalayas.  As
long ago as 1977 researchers reported in the
International Archives of Allergy and Applied
Immunology, that its powdered root was able
to render respiratory tissues less sensitive to
histamine and could help to dilate the
bronchial tubes.  The severity and duration
of allergic attacks was also shortened and
total histamine content of lung tissue
significantly less.  This could possibly be
related to its antioxidant properties.
Licorice root simulates the actions of
the anti-inflammatory hormone cortisol.
Tylophora asthmaticais also a proven
healer in cases of breathing difficulty, with
very positive reports published in leading
international journals such as the Annals of
Allergy, Planta Medica and IndianJournal
of Medical Research.
Cayenne desensitizes the mucous
membranes to smoke and other irritants.
Magnesiumcalms the nerve endings in
the lungs.

Single Overeating Binge Could Be Deadly this Holiday Season
T
his holiday season, all too many of us look forward to stuffing ourselves with all the
fixings, then relaxing in front of the television.  But such overeating could be a recipe
for holiday disaster.
Examining records over twelve years, Dr. Robert Kloner and colleagues at the University
of Southern California found 33 percent more deaths from heart attacks and other
circulatory blockages in Los Angeles in December and January than in summer and early
autumn.
There could be a number of factors at work.  The blood thickens and is prone to clotting
after even a single high-fat meal.  Combine this with the fact that people tend to light more
fires in the winter.  Particles emitted from fires could irritate the lungs, decreasing the
amount of oxygen in the bloodstream.
Natural Health Tip:Choose lean cuts of turkey instead of fatty roast beef.  Choose sherbet
instead of ice cream with a small slice of dessert.  Instead of retiring to the couch after
dinner, plan ahead of time on going for a walk and getting some fresh air.  Keep windows
open at least a little for ventilation.
