Women’s Sexual Vitality
Black Cohosh in ProPause® May Be Key
Today, many women seeking to rejuvenate their sexuality are prescribed testosterone by their doctors. But how safe is testosterone? Are there alternatives? Experts are quick to take sides.
Women, as well as men, produce testosterone. As with men, this powerful androgen affects sex drive as well as energy levels and general sense of well-being in women, notes an expert. In The Hormone of Desire: The Truth About Sexuality, Menopause, and Testosterone, psychiatrist Susan Rako observes that menopausal women lose much of their testosterone, as well as estrogen. Dr. Rako says that very low testosterone levels interfere with a woman’s sex drive. Julian Whitaker, M.D. maintains women given small amounts of testosterone exude glowing sexuality. Clearly, use of testosterone for perking up women’s sexuality is becoming quite popular.

Long-term Safety Questions
But, many experts say prescribing testosterone for women is untested. Dr. Wulf Utian of the University Hospital of Cleveland has observed that there is currently “a big sell going on for testosterone,” but cautions women and their doctors about the lack of long-term studies to validate its safety.
Says Dr. Sadja Greenwood of the University of California Medical School: “Women should not be told testosterone is the hormone of desire. . . . So many times women

have been given medications before the long-term consequences are in. Is this another case?”
In spite of the enthusiasm among both doctors and patients, there are few long-term clinical safety studies.
I recommend that women considering testosterone therapy weigh both risks and benefits carefully as well as a possible natural alternative: ProPause combined with Evening Glow, two formulas from Whitewing Labs.

Natural Testosterone Alternative?
Women should know a viable natural pathway may be available to enhance their vitality and sexuality. Published results show that a clinically validated black cohosh formula may be an effective alternative to testosterone therapy.
In 1987, a study was carried out in a gynecological clinical over the course of six months with 50 female patients with

notable menopausal symptoms who were receiving both estrogen and androgens. The idea of this study was to convert these women to a treatment using black cohosh. Some 56% of patients switched to black cohosh required no additional hormone injections. Some 82% of patients reported the success of the therapy as “good” or “very good.” Further estrogen-androgen treatment was necessary in only 18% of patients.
These results suggest that for some women there may be a safe and natural alternative to testosterone replacement therapy for enhancing women’s sexuality and vitality. Published results on individual ingredients suggest that women seeking to perk up their sexuality might benefit from ProPause with black cohosh instead of going down the potentially more dangerous testosterone route.
Another formula that can also help women of all ages is Evening Glow. In a 1991 pilot study, published in Fortsch Med., two groups of 20 women with menopause-related symptoms were given either kava kava extract or a placebo.
The women receiving the kava kava demonstrated significant improvement in symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, hot flashes and general well-being compared to the placebo group.
I recommend Evening Glow be used with ProPause for perking up women’s sexuality in lieu of more toxic testosterone or other medical drugs.
