Simple Ways to Manage Menopause
by Megan Shields, M.D.

"The number of women exploring alternative and complementary medicine is growing at an exponential rate,” says Shari Lieberman, Ph.D., C.N.S., editor-in-chief of Women’s Health Alternative Medicine Report. “Today, women expect—even demand their physicians to be knowledgeable about these therapies or they will look for physicians who understand these therapies and will integrate them into their personal health care regimen.”
As a doctor who, indeed, embraces the best of both worlds, I know that women today need information on how they may use quality dietary supplements to bolster their own youth quest, particularly during menopause. This report will provide you with natural solutions to some of the most common difficulties women experience during this transitional period.

Bleeding Irregularities
During perimenopause, the body produces fluctuating and decreasing levels of estrogen and progesterone. As a result of these hormonal changes, many women experience abnormal periods.
What to Do: Supplement your diet with the B complex, especially vitamins B-6 and folic acid which support healthy blood cell production for the reproductive tissues; magnesium to keep vessels relaxed and supple; all these nutrients may be found in OsteoSafe® from Whitewing Labs. Eat foods rich in essential fatty acids such as cold water fish (e.g., salmon) or flaxseed.

Hot Flashes
During menopause, the pituitary gland overproduces luteinizing hormone, which is associated with hot flashes and elevated skin temperature. Changes also occur in the surface blood vessels, which dilate, increasing blood flow to the surface, raising the temperature of the body by as much as two degrees; also,

the heart beats slightly faster and sweating occurs. Cold flashes with chills may also occur.
What to Do: Avoid foods that tend to trigger hot flashes: caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, soft drinks, sugar and spicy foods tend to constrict or dilate blood vessels. Use black cohosh, an herb believed to help regulate hormones and that beneficially suppresses secretion of luteinizing hormone. Also, take vitamin E. Propause® from Whitewing Labs combines these nutrients with red clover, magnesium, vitamin B6 and folic acid. Use a transdermal cream with soy and natural progesterone (e.g., ProTrans Cream from Whitewing Labs).

Fatigue and Sleep Problems
Fatigue can be caused by loss of sleep due to hormonal fluctuations that interrupt sleep patterns or cause nighttime hot flashes; and also by anxiety; mood swings, and physical changes such as anemia due to excessive bleeding.
What to Do: To insure that you promote stable blood sugar levels and healthy insulin sensitivity is key; you will better utilize the fuel foods in your diet. Be sure to choose carbohydrates from

fruits and vegetables. Avoid high-glucose refined foods such as cookies, pasta and breads that can put you on a sugar-blues roller coaster.
Try Siberian ginseng in Propause, which modifies the alarm phase of the adrenal glands’ fight-or-flight response and helps relieves stress. For better sleep, try Whitewing Labs’ SleepSafe. My patients have experimented with other sleep formulas, but this is the one they always come back to. It’s great with just the right blend of valerian root, melatonin, niacinamide, hops, passion flower and other nutrients that induce not only a deep but a rejuvenating sleep.

Bone Loss
During menopause, bone loss often accelerates, leaving women vulnerable to osteoporosis.
What to Do: Take supplemental magnesium, calcium and vitamin D. I tell my patients to make it simple by using OsteoSafe from Whitewing Labs.
